Thoughtful analysis. Although…scene was scripted, I’m just confused on why they (the director, not the actors) showed that kind of body language. Why have Regina look at Emma’s lips as she approached her? Why does she look at Emma like she wants her? I could understand that Regina was exerting dominance over Emma by stepping closer to her, but why do they look so damn intimate? What purpose did that show? The scene could have made its point even if they were not standing that close to one another.

I don’t think the director had any intention of it coming across sexual, why would he/she? when in the story they’re suppose to be scared for Henry? I doubt in the script it said, Regina looks at Emma’s lips and looks at her like she wants her, while worrying about Henry. I think that was Lana’s subconscious body language because there is some attraction there. It’s just an involuntary, natural, subconscious, reaction when we see something we like.  You’re right she stepped closer to exert dominance, but, it looked intimate because of Lana and Jennifer, not the script.

This is a requested analysis of the moments from Min. 2:14 - 2:43, :).


.2:14 - 2:22, is pretty much to the script I’d say. But remember it’s early on, I feel Lana and Jennifer have got a lot more confident in their ‘interaction’ since this scene. And they are meant to be playing worried parents after all.

. 2:23 - 2:25, Notice how Lana’s shoulders rise, this indicates she is breathing high up in the chest. We breathe high in the chest when we’re accessing visual information. She has been stimulated VISUALLY, she likes what she sees basically and since she’s looking at Jennifer, she’s visually enjoying Jennifer. Also her shoulders stay risen, showing she’s holding that inhalation, this can show anxiety and tension. It can also signify anticipation, she’s anticipating what’s going to happen next and obviously, she knows what’s going to happen next, cause it’s scripted, so she’s anticipating that . Also her eyes shift from side to side, this is what is called the triangular formation of vision, she’s not just looking Jennifer in the eye, she’s looking from one eye to the other and at the bridge of her nose, which shows she is genuinely interested in Jennifer. Also, her lips part slightly, another sign of interest/ attraction.

. 2:25 - 2:29, Jennifer is also breathing high up in the chest, again, stimulated visually.  Also there is a lot of room behind her, in the camera frame, which makes me think she’s stood closer to Lana then she’s suppose to, she’s not standing on her mark and she inches closer while speaking as-well. 

.2:29 - 2:31, Lana looks at Jennifer’s lips, this shows attraction and desire to kiss. Also, her eyelashes flutter, a sign of excitement or pressure. And, still, her lips are parted, showing interest/attraction. 


. 2:32 - 2:33, Jennifer’s lips are parted - Interest/ attraction. Also, when Lana steps to the side slightly Jennifer turns her body and shoulders to the side also, keeping her whole body facing Lane completely, this shows genuine interest.

. 2:33 - 2:36, Lana’s lips are still parted and also her shoulders drop, showing she is relaxed. Her lips twitch, as-well,  this is subconscious, she’s thinking of something she wants to say, obviously she can’t say it.

. 2:36 - 2:39, Lana’s eyes are firmly on Jennifer’s lips, but her shoulders are hunched over, which is defensive body language and her head is down, which can show embarrassment. Jennifer can see this and gives her a little smile, in-which Lana gives her a smile in return. Again, with the space behind Jennifer, I think she’s not standing on her mark.

Notice at 1:35, when Lana says “um”, Jennifer Morrison also says “um” and then look at Lana’s reaction. I am studying body language and find great interest in how these two interact, which is why I became a Swan Queen shipper :).

Well, thank you for your interest :). To answer your first question, I don’t think the “um” meant anything in particular, but, what it does show, is that Jennifer and Lana are very much aware of each other and distracted by one another. Jennifer was obviously listening to Lana and when Lana said “um” Jennifer involuntarily said it (we subconsciously mimic people we are interested in, because we admire them) and Lana was also obviously listening to Jennifer because of her reaction when Jennifer said it (she inhales from the mid-section, which is a response to auditory stimulation, also her head tilts and her speech quickens, both, also reactions to auditory stimulation .
